Vehicle Licence Renewal Requirements

Every vehicle on South African roads must display a valid disc on the windscreen, and the location is more specific than people think.
Here’s a quick reminder:
The licence disc must be placed on the inside of the windscreen, lower left-hand corner (as viewed from the outside front of the vehicle), so it’s clearly visible to traffic officers.
Renewal must be completed annually before the expiry date shown on the disc (most of us never give the license disk a second look after applying it).
Vehicle licence renewal notices (MVL2) are no longer routinely posted by the RTMC.
As of 1 October 2020, notices are sent electronically via SMS or email, provided your contact details are up to date.
If you do not receive the notice electronically, you can download it from the NaTIS portal or complete the ALV form at your registering authority, which is available on most municipal websites.
Previously, these notices were sent through the post, classic old-school paper reminders in the mail.
The process is now fully electronic, making renewals faster and more convenient.
A 21-day grace period applies after expiry, during which no administrative penalties are charged.
However, driving with an expired disc during that time can still result in a fine.
After the grace period (on the 22nd day after your license expired) a 1/10 of the annual license fee is added.
On the 1st day of the second month thereafter, they add the 1/10 and 1/12 (pro rata) of the annual license fee, every month.

Your annual vehicle license fee = R 1 000
Penalties get added as follows:
- On 2025/07/22, they add 1/10 (R 100) penalty.
- On 2025/08/01 – nothing is added
- On 2025/09/01 – they add 1/10 (R 100) and 1/12 (R 83.33)
- On 2025/10/01 – they add 1/10 (R 100) and 1/12 (R 83.33)
This structure continues until your license is paid up.
